In 2015, six museums in Medellin joined for the first time to carry out three Bike to the Museum rides, invited by the Education Committee of the Red de Museos de Antioquia (Antioquia’s Museums Network), with the support of the vice-secretary of Cultural Citizenship, part of the Secretary of Culture of the Municipality of Medellín.
The International Council of Museums (UNESCO-ICOM) chooses a theme each year for the International Museum Day, which aims to share the concerns of the museums’ community with society. This celebration took place on May 18th 2015, emphasizing the role of Museums for Sustainable Societies.
Mankind must adopt lifestyles and development ways according to the limits of nature. The transition to a type of sustainable society goes through the invention of new thinking and action methods. Modern museums should play a key role in this transition, and should consolidate their position and make their voices heard in this context.
The theme Museums for a Sustainable Society recognizes the role of museums in the discussion about the need for a less wasteful and more caring society that takes advantage of the resources in a more respectful way with biological systems.
From May 16 to 18, people that had previously registered could visit two museums for free each day , as well as participate in activities specially designed for this occasion.
